Judy Pfaff, one of the most influential sculptors of her generation, also has a long career of working in the medium of printmaking. Known for her large-scale, complex and challenging installation work, Pfaff brings a unique approach to her prints which are energetic and powerful.
For the two new prints published by HuiPress, Pfaff worked intensely carving wood blocks assisted by HuiPress printers. Paia, named for the town seven miles below the HuiPress studio on Maui’s North Shore, is similar to the large scale woodcuts Pfaff has been making for the past few years. Layers of collage, spray painting, hand coloring, and ink stick give the work a tactility found in her drawings and sculptures.
At Times Paradise,is printed simply in a rich black from an intricately carved woodblock, started in Maui and finished in her New York studio with printer Casey Neumann. The powerful beauty of the block was evident in the first proofs and Pfaff decided to call the print finished after she applied a layer of shellac, giving the surface a beautiful distressed feel which is common in her works on paper.
