INTENSIVE PHOTOGRAVURE AND DIRECT GRAVURE
August 16-20, 2006, 5 days
Wednesday, 6:00 - 9:00 PM
Thursday - Sunday, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Photogravure is a truly continuous tone photographic etching process, unlike any other photographic printing process. The tonalities are created by an ink layer, gradually varying in depth, with a very fine aquatint to hold the ink. A film positive can be created digitally or traditionally on litho film, and in this course we will touch on direct gravure, using hand-drawn positives on mylar to create images. Students learn to etch the plate gradually from the deepest shadows to the brightest highlights to achieve a much wider range of tones than any other photographic process. The finished plate is printed as an etching on a heavy rag paper with an oil-based ink that may be of any tone or color. The result is an archival continuous tone photographic print, with the plate mark embossed, giving the final print an almost three-dimensional quality. Photogravure is a medium that can be equally as rewarding for printmakers as for photographers. |

ALTERNATIVE PROCESSES IN PHOTO AND PRINTMAKING
Gwen Arkin and Paul Mullowney
Saturdays, 6 weeks
March 25 - April 29, 2006
1:00 - 4:00 pm
The traditional processes of cyanotype and Van Dyke printing are classic and exciting ways to transfer images to Western and Asian papers, silks and fabrics. In the Print Studio this class will explore the combining of alternative photo processes with traditional copper plate etchings and woodcut. We will cover the use of Japanese papers in printing, and traditional methods of cooking wheat starch paste for collage. Creating films with Photoshop will also be integral-- Bring your laptop if you have one! Open to all skill levels. |
Gwen Arkin, Van Dyke print |
Fee: $205 ($246 non-member)
Supply Fee: $35
(includes ink, chemistry and film)
Gwen Arkin is an experimental photographer who explores non-silver photographic processes and uses nontraditional cameras. These primitive apparatuses and 19th century processes require the artist to relinquish control and focus exclusively on composition, light and texture. Such constraints result in an extremely visceral process, and in impressions that are both unpredictable and often serendipitous. She holds a MFA from the University of Colorado and has previously taught at the Colorado Institute of Art. |
